Coronary Angioplasty +/- Stenting
What is it?
A small balloon tipped catheter is inflated inside a coronary artery where there is a blockage or narrowed section. The balloon catheter is deflated and then removed, after which blood flow in the coronary artery is improved. A stent is a small tubular shaped stainless steel wire cage, which can be use in the combination with an angioplasty procedure. The stent remains permanently in the artery, preventing the blockage or narrowing from reoccurring.
Preparation
You will need to fast for 6 hours prior to the procedure. Take all of your usual medications unless instructed otherwise by your cardiologist. You will be in hospital overnight and usually will be discharged by your cardiologist the following day. You will not be permitted to drive themselves home after the procedure and will need to have someone stay with them that evening. If you live in a regional centre, you may be advised to stay locally for a few days after the procedure.
Results
Your cardiologist will advise on the result at the time of the procedure. A follow up appointment will more than likely be organized a couple of weeks later in the consulting rooms.
If you are a patient undergoing this procedure and you have any further queries, please raise them with your cardiologist.
