Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE)
What is it?
A TOE is similar to an Echocardiogram, but is performed via an ultrasound transducer sitting in the gullet. As this is much closer to the heart than a traditional transducer, it allows a clearer and more detailed view of the heart structures. The T.O.E will give your doctor information which cannot be gained in any other way.
Preparation
Absolutely no food or drink for 6 hours prior to the test. Due to the small dose of relaxant given during the test, you will be observed for a short time after the test and then allowed to go home with another adult. For the rest of the day, you must not drink any hot drinks, alcohol, drive a vehicle, travel on public transport, sign important documents or participate in heavy lifting or sports.
Results
Your referring doctor will obtain a copy of the report within 24-48 hours of the test. If another cardiologist requests the test, then they will receive a dictated letter and a copy of the test.
If you are a patient undergoing this test and you have any further queries, please raise them with your cardiologist.
